U.S. sanctions against Iran, followed by EU sanctions, have had effect:  Iran sells his oil 50 percent less than before the sanctions.

Further, Iranians can't use international banking system. These sanctions affect, obviously to ordinary people. 

Maybe, the using of the international trade system in order to promote political goals could be wrong, because harming many innocent people. 

But we can’t forget the strategy of any Empire, we must think,  that US is obliged to use all their possible resources to maintain the international order (in the broad sense of the word: order) that US wants, and most of nations, also want. 

It is very difficult decide in the right way, about these matters, because are too many factors, and too many consequences, to find the best solution.

Further, It’s impossible to predict what could happen if Iran had a way of using the crisis as an opportunity.
