Reefer container shortage to persist in 2018

The emerging digital supply chain is offering shippers improved reefer container tracking, as well as better control / management of the cargo's condition. But a decade of reefer underinvestment and an accelerating global economy has led to a shortage of reefer containers.

Despite the nature of the reefer trade with its seasonal swings in commodities and trade lanes, reefer container rates in 2017 did not reflect any slack or off-peak dips.

Shippers in north and northeast Brazil are looking forward to a new service calling, starting in April, at the port of Pecém, which will offer a first-ever direct connection to the Far East, as part of an around-the-world (RTW) service.

Although Maersk Line and Hamburg Süd last month heralded the start of a new Asia to west coast of South America (WCSA) service with calls that include — via the Panama Canal — Cartagena (Colombia) and Pecém (north Brazil), they did not promote the fact that it is a very rare, RTW offering.

Temperature differences in reefer containers aren’t a new problem. Over the years, various solutions were thought of, and pieces of cardboard are extensively worked with to optimise air flow in the containers. In 2016, Wageningen UR started research to scientifically show which way is effective.

2016 saw the South African reefer market contract by about three percent – largely due to lower crop yields of citrus caused by the severe drought experienced across the region. However, refrigerated container trade still makes up about 19 percent of total South African container exports, says Matthew Conroy, Trade Manager of Maersk Line Southern Africa, and he is positive about 2017 

Due to the age of conventional reefer ships, 30 years on average, more and more ships will be taken off of the water in the coming year. Last year the company formerly known as Lloyd scrapped 24 reefer ships, the largest amount since 2012. This was mentioned by Dynamar in a recent report.
