Build your own Chinese – African Business Routes.

Belt and Road Initiative: Contribution by all, benefits for all

Hailed as “the project of the century” by Xi, it is a comprehensive project that seeks to embrace all aspects of development.

The BRI is a massive trade and infrastructure project that aims to link China — physically and financially — to dozens of economies across Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

The primary focuses of the BRI — also known as One Belt One Road (OBOR) — are infrastructure, transportation, and energy.

OBOR consists of two parts: The “Belt,” which reinvents the ancient Silk Road land route, and the “Road” which is a route through various oceans.

It is the greatest ever project introduced to the world. Its dimensions are huge.

As Beijing is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the BRI, China has so far invested at least $900 billion in projects along the BRI African countries, mainly in infrastructure, transport, and energy.

What will come of China’s “go global” policy as it pertains to Africa? One thing is apparent: China’s influence throughout the continent will endure for decades. This, in part, is assured by China’s involvement with African parastatals that now rely on Chinese financing to remain liquid. China’s reputation on the continent, and the attitude of African leaders toward Chinese investment, will likely be influenced by how China responds to any African country that does default on a Chinese loan.

According to the realism theory of international relations world politics has been characterized by power politics. In the context of security and global geopolitics the horn of Africa region and the Suez Canal has been traditionally a Western-controlled zone with the US and her allies being the primary guarantor for maritime security. Any powerful state controls the security of that region, also controls the maritime trade routes between Asia, Europe and Africa. Egypt and Djibouti, two of the three African states part of the OBOR are strategically located at the heart of global geo-politics playground. Djibouti is quite unique as it now hosts military bases for the US, France and now China. While the fight against pirates has often been cited as the propellant behind this, one can’t quite push the power struggles as being the true variable for these great power shaving such a heavy military presence in the region. The entry into Djibouti and the region by China could slope and re align security partnerships that have underpinned global order since 1945 but For Egypt, its strategic geographical location at the Suez Canal gives it an indispensable status, explaining why it’s the only African nation to officially sign bilateral agreements with China on One Belt, One Road.

Gamification 4.0 will be key

“Ensuring a level playing field for companies requires a legislative framework which provides an adequate balance between the freedom to provide services within the Internal Market and the protection of workers’ rights,” said Tonning. “This plays a crucial role in the competitiveness of genuine companies

“However, contrary to what some organisations are claiming, the recent modifications to the Posting Directive are not the panacea against all fraud. We therefore remain careful at this stage about the possible positive added value introduced by the new provisions.”

Anything that boosts employee engagement is good for business—a 2012 Gallup study found that companies with an engaged workforce outperformed their non-engaged competition by 147%.

Hiring, Onboarding, and Retaining Staff

Certain training games can also be used by HR departments to test a job applicant's skills and aptitude. Just seeing how an applicant performs on the software can reveal a lot about how they will perform their job.Once the staff are hired, gamification is also effective for onboarding to help introduce the new employees to corporate culture and processes.

Although our central estimate is that the net effect of AI on jobs will be positive in China, as opposed to broadly neutral in a mature economy like the UK, there are many uncertain factors that could tip the balance towards more optimistic or pessimistic scenarios. Government policy will therefore have an important role, working with business and other institutions, in steering China towards a more favourable outcome.

We have identified some policy areas where action could help to maximise the benefits from AI (e.g. through implementing the Next Generation AI Plan in full) and mitigate the costs in terms of impacts on jobs and income inequality (e.g. through extensive retraining schemes for displaced workers, an enhanced social safety net and increased support for rural areas). In this way, the great potential economic benefits from AI and related technologies can be spread as widely as possible across Chinese society.

Have you ever wondered if what you say online can be used against you in China? Or if in case you copy something from the internet that you did not write, and then publish it, if you can be sued?

The answer is yes.

In China, content on Wechat, other social media and on the internet can be used as evidence in courts.

Notarisation before use in court

For years, China’s Supreme People’s Court (SPC) already allowed Wechat to be used as evidence in court.

Normally, before this digital evidence can be used though, it needs to be notarized by a Chinese notary public in order to be allowed as evidence.

The reasoning for this is that without notarization the evidence could be tampered with, as it is quite easy to fake an online account, statement or document.  Therefore, if the evidence is not notarised, it will not be allowed as evidence in court.
