European Union and Thailand (By Sylodium, international trade directory)

The European Union and Thailand have officially begun negotiations on a free-trade agreement. The announcement was last week during a visit to Brussels by Thailand's Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawatra. Thailand is fourth member of the Association of South-East Nations (Asean) with which the EU has begun free-trade talks since 2010. It had initially wanted an agreement with the ten-member bloc. In the meantime, Asean is seeking to deepen the economic integration of its members, with the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. Free-trade agreement with the EU would help to compensate for the lapse of EU trade privileges granted to Thailand under the EU's ‘generalised system of preferences', the privileges, which affect a large minority of Thai exports, end on 31 December. A free-trade deal could take two years to complete.
